Student / Guardian Visa

The Student and Student Guardian visas are designed for individuals who want to study in Australia on a full-time basis. These visas allow individuals to stay in Australia for the duration of their course, and also allow for certain work rights.

  1. Student visa (subclass 500) allows international students to study in Australia for a period of up to 5 years, depending on the length of the course. Eligibility criteria for this visa include enrolment in an approved course, proof of sufficient financial support, and English language proficiency.To be eligible for a Student visa, individuals must:
    • Meet the health and character requirements
    • Have an unconditional offer of a place in a registered course from an approved education provider
    • Have enough financial capacity to support themselves for the duration of their stay in Australia
    • Possess appropriate health insurance
    • Meet English language requirements (may be waived for certain courses)
    • Meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria, which assesses whether the applicant has a genuine intention to study in Australia temporarily and have ties to their home country that would encourage them to return after their studies.
  2. Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) is for individuals who want to come to Australia to care for a student who is under 18 years of age and is studying in Australia. The basic eligibility criteria for this visa include being a close relative of the student, having the responsibility for the student’s welfare, and having enough funds to support both the student and yourself while in Australia.
